Our Story

Our Story- It's Never Too Late to Live Happily Ever After!

Every once in a while, in the course of life, something miraculous can happen. It might take you completely by surprise and entirely change the course of your life.

Such a miraculous thing happened to us, two and a half years ago.

We were both certain that we were past the time for a loving romantic relationship. Both of us were very serious about our spiritual path, with its commitment to daily routines of meditation, study, and service. We eacb had told ourselves we wanted "an ashram life".

And then, through a set of most unlikely circumstances, we met while giving service.

Kat was the lead of the Fellowship Team of the Voluntary League of Disciples, a part of Self-Realization Fellowship, founded by Paramahansa Yogananda. This team's mission is to incubate new ways for our members around whe world to have fellowship. Kat asked Bruce to research "a few quotes" from Paramahansa Yogananda on the importance of fellowship. Bruce found 30 pages of quotes, so he passed that test with flying colors. Then he "rode shotgun" helping Kat with the team's projects and quickly becoming indispensible. It was inevitable that Kat would ask him to co-lead the team with her.

Kat was in Chicago and Bruce was in Los Angeles. But they found themselves having long-distance Zoom calls almost every day, and texting messages throughout the day that made each other laugh and sigh. Through giving service, they also got to know each other well and discovered they were a terrific working and writing team. They found they could work together in a joyous flow, and had a real creative synergy that helped to draw dynamic members to their team and bond them as a powerfully evolving group of world servers. The Voluntary League work has enriched our lives and given us a loving community of spiritual friends.

Almost immediately when we met, there was a sense of deep commonality and connection. We felt we had known each other before, perhaps in more than one prior lifetime.

There was a sense of recognition and shared interests-- true soul mates. "Friends once more to be" as Paramahansa Yogananda put it. Early on, Bruce said to Kat, somewhat amazed, "I know you!" And Kat felt the same way.

Kat had been longing for a larger SRF spiritual community than was available in Chicago. Los Angeles is rich with temples and SRF sites including the beautiful Lake Shrine in Pacific Pallisades. Kat knew that she would have at least one good friend in Los Angeles in Bruce, and they both felt-- "Who knows what this relationship might become?" So she felt strong enough to put her home in Chicago up for sale and travel to Los Angeles to explore what might be. Kat and Bruce met face to face in August 2022, and together they found a condo for her to rent in Los Angeles.

It quickly became apparent that we were spending all of our time together at Bruce's house, and that the condo wasn't needed. Bruce asked Kat to join him "officially" in his home in early 2023. They call this beautiful dwelling The Ashram of the Two Trees and they are it's resident Yogi and Yogini.

Our relationship continued to deepen, and the joy in being together continued to increase. In March 2024, Bruce proposed to Kat in Big Sur at a beautiful spot overlooking the ocean, and she, of course, said yes.

As we prepare for our wedding we continue to share a life of love, spirituality and service, and the fun of being together.

We are deeply grateful that God and our Gurudeva brought us to each other.

Thank you all for being a part of our story and sharing this special time with us. We look forward to seeing many of you on September 28 as we become husband and wife.

And we ask you all to remember-- It's never too late to live happily ever after. Miracles can happen. We know.
